THE GRAND TRADITION OF PAULY BEDS
THE STORY OF PAULY BEDS IS ABOUT THE ART OF SLEEP
Josef Pauly, founder of PAULY Beds, came from a well-respected family in Vienna, Austria. He founded the company in 1838 during the period known as Romanticism when values like the beauty of nature and individual imagination were ascendant. The license to open the company under the name of J. Pauly & Sohn was granted by the ruling Emperor Ferdinand I.
By the 1870s Pauly 's exclusive bed-crafting business was flourishing and he officially became the Official Imperial Court Supplier of Beds to the Austrian Hungarian Empire. This meant he was the exclusive supplier of beds to the court of Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth, known as Sisi. This was a period of rapid change as the Second Industrial Revolution and the Impressionist art movement were coming into their own. Innovation and creativity were reaching new heights and by 1891 Pauly’s beds had already won 10 awards and had become internationally acclaimed.
Empress Sisi, accustomed to the very best, was obsessed with beauty and keeping a young look. With these priorities, she helped set the standards of quality and comfort that Pauly’s beds have come to be known for.
Joseph Pauly and his son’s mastery in handcrafting beds was an art. In his day, every bed handcrafted bed was considered a masterpiece by the Viennese aristocrats and upper classes who lived the good life and knew how to meet most from it. The tradition of craftmanship continues today.
